Joel Douglas is a historic preservationist, hotelier, and real estate developer, and a military veteran.
Joel and Barbara Douglas own and operate Lairmont Manor in Bellingham, the Coachman Inn motel on Whidbey Island, and Grandview Business Center in Ferndale, all in Washington State.
Joel is also known for his leadership in the preservation and restoration of Larrabee House (aka Lairmont) in Bellingham, Fairhaven Historical District in Bellingham, and San Juan County Courthouse on San Juan Island, all now on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
He was also a leader in preserving and restoring The Terminal Building in Bellingham, Camp Nooksack Tabernacle in Nooksack, and Vashon Island Ferry Terminal Building, all now on the Washington State Heritage Register.
His principal development work of the past 45 years includes myriad residential and commercial projects, including the Seascape condominiums in Blaine, Oak Grove Apartments in Oak Harbor, the Montecito condo townhouses in Friday Harbor, and Harbor Business Center warehouse rentals in Anacortes, all in Washington State.
Joel served in the US military, approximately three years active duty and eleven years reserve duty, including as a US Army Reserves Captain. He was commander of recognized companies that received Division awards for outstanding service to their country, and he served as Assistant Provost Marshal of Yakima Training Center at Fort Lewis, Washington, and Fort Gordon, in Augusta, Georgia.
Joel and Barbara Douglas have been married since 1964 and have three children: Mark, Juli, and Sydney.
